Dalip Singh Rana was born in Himachal Pradesh. His father is called Jwala Ram and his mother is called Tandi Devi. He started his career as a labourer. Then he joined the Punjab state police He won the title of Mr. India in 1997 and 1998.
In 1999, he went to America on a work permit and he joined the World Wrestling Entertainment (WWE). In October 2000 he made his wrestling debut for All Pro Wrestling.
In January 2006 he was became the first Indian to sign a contract with the World Wrestling Entertainment.
Today he is better known by the name Khali that he adopted in April 2006. The name Khali was chosen after the Hindu goddess Kali who is said to be a destructive ruler.
He played a small role in a Hollywood film The Longest Yard in 2005. His debut film in Bollywood is Kushti.
