Manisha Koirala was born on August 16, 1970 in Kathmandu. Nepal. Manisha Koirala is of Nepali origin and she is also an accomplished Bharatnatyam and Manipuri dancer. She was born in the politically prominent Koirala family. Her grandfather Bishweshwar Prasad Koirala was the Prime Minister of Nepal during the late '50s and early '60s. Her two great uncles, Girija Prasad Koirala and MP Koirala were also big political figures in Nepal.
She studied at the Army Public School, Dhaula Kuan New Delhi and later the Vasant Kanya Mahavidyalaya in Varanasi. Her brief modelling stint opened a career path to Bollywood.
Her acting career started with a Nepali movie Pheri Bhetaula in 1989. She made her big Bollywood debut with Subhash Ghai’s Saudagar in 1991 which went on to become a top grosser of its times. She remained one of the top actresses of Indian cinema throughout the '90s and was critically acclaimed for her performances in many movies.
She won her first Filmfare award for Mani Ratnam’s bilingual Bombay, which also won her the Filmfare Best Performer Award.
Later that year, her performance in Sanjay Leela Bhansali’s directorial debut venture, Khamoshi – The Musical won her a second consecutive Filmfare Best Performer Award as well as a Star Screen Award for Best Actress. She worked again with Mani Ratnam in Dil Se.
In 2002 she won her third Filmfare Best Performer Award for her role in Ram Gopal Varma’s Company opposite Ajay Devgan.
In 2003, Manisha left mainstream cinema and went on to do many low budget yet challenging ventures like Escape From Taliban and Market. The former won her a BFJA Best Actress Award in 2003 as well.
In 2007 her only release was Anwar where she acted with her brother Siddharth Koirala.
She has recently finished shooting for Rituparno Ghosh’s Khela and is all set to star in Deepa Mehta’s patriotic foreign film Exclusion.
