Rajat Kapoor was born In Delhi and did his early schooling there. Even as a child he was a keen film buff. He was a founder member of the theatre group Chingari which became operational in 1983. In 1985 he joined the Film and Television Institute of India (FTII) where he studied till 1988. He assisted Kumar Shahani on two films on Khayalgatha and Bhavantaran. Then for one year he worked with Mani Kaul on Nazar.
Later he made Tarana (a short film on Hindustani classical music) for Films Division, and his first feature film Private Detective/ Two plus two plus one. Apart from direction he also tried his hand at acting. Today Rajat is more recognised as an actor than as a director.
His first feature film Raghu Romeo released in 2003. This was followed by Mixed Doubles and Mithya.
