Rani Mukerji’s father Ram Mukerji, is a retired director and mother Krishna used to be a playback singer. Her brother Raja Mukerji is a film producer, now turned director. Rani studied at Maneckjee Cooper High School, Juhu, and later went onto Mithibai College in Mumbai.
While in school at the age of 14, Mukerji did a cameo role in her father's Bengali film Biyar Phool (1992).
Rani's first big hit in Bollywood was the movie Ghulam.
Her next big hit was Karan Johar's Kuch Kuch Hota Hai.
Her best performances were in Mujhse Dosti Karoge, Saathiya, Chalte Chalte, Chori Chori, Hum Tum, Veer-Zaara, Bunty Aur Babli, Kabhi Alvida Naa Kehna and Baabul.
However, Rani received critical acclaim for her performance in Black for which she pocketed many trophies in the category of Best Actress.
She is the first actress to ever win both the Best Actress and Best Supporting Actress trophies in a single year (2005) at the Filmfare.
She has won over 60 awards till date.
She was honoured by an audience of 50,000 at the Casablanca Film Festival (2005) in Morocco, where four of her films were presented to the foreign audience.
In February 2005, Mukerji performed at the HELP Telethon Concert, to help raise money for the Tsunami victims.
