Salman is the eldest son of the famous screenwriter Salim Khan and his wife Salma Khan. His stepmother Helen is the famous yesteryear Bollywood dancer and actress.
He has two brothers, Arbaaz Khan and Sohail Khan, and two sisters, Alvira and Arpita. Alvira is married to actor/director Atul Agnihotri.
In 1988, he made his debut with the movie Biwi Ho To Aisi.
In 1989, he had his first commercial success with the blockbuster Maine Pyar Kiya and won a Filmfare Best Debut Award for his performance.
In 1994, he starred in Hum Aapke Hain Kaun directed by Suraj Barjatiya and it remains one of Indian cinema's highest grossing films ever.
In 2007, his first Hollywood movie, Marigold: An Adventure in India opposite American actress Ali Larter was released. The film bombed at the box office. Salman Khan appears in a very important cameo role in Sanjay Leela Bhansali’s Saawariya. He also plans to star in Tom And Jerry, sequel to Partner, along with Govinda.
He recently took a crash course in painting at JJ School of Arts. Salman Khan paints as a hobby. He has made several paintings over the last few years. In May 2007, one of his paintings, an abstract, showing the back of a woman holding a child in her arms fetched him Rupees One Crore.
