Subhash Ghai graduated from the Film & Television Institute of India, Pune. In 1976 he received his directorial break was for the film Kalicharan which he obtained through a recommendation by Shatrughan Sinha. This film went on to become one of the biggest hits of its time.
His most notable films in the 1980s were Karz (1980), Vidhaata (1982), Hero (1983), Karma (1986) and Ram Lakhan (1989). In 1991 he went on to win the Filmfare Best Director Award for Saudagar.
In 1993 he directed Khalnayak, where the popular number Choli Ke Peeche Kya Hai became fairly controversial.
His later films like Pardes and Taal where well received by the NRI audience all over the world and they featured in Hollywood top twenty at box-office for various weeks.
Certain sections of the media have nicknamed him 'showman' or 'dream merchant' at various moments in time.
The President of India honored him with a national award for making Karma an anti-terrorism motion picture in 1986.
Subhash Ghai is one of the most renowned names among Indians and south Asians for his excellent record as an Indian filmmaker in mainstream cinema for the last 26 years.
Subhash Ghai has written and directed 16 motion pictures out of which 13 have been declared as the biggest blockbusters their time.
Subhash Ghai is the chairman and managing director of Mukta Arts Limited the first corporate film company in Mumbai film industry.
He introduced many new talents and groomed them into stars such as Madhuri Dixit, Jackie Shroff, Meenakshi Sheshadri, Manisha Koirala, Mahima Chaudhry, Isha Shravani, Shreyas Talpade and more.
In 2005, he opened a center called Whistling Woods International Institute for Film, Television and Media Arts.
In 2007, was conferred a National Award as producer of the film Iqbal.
He was also selected as final round jury member for the International EMMY Awards 2007.
