Vinod Khanna's parents were Kisnanchand and Kamla Khanna. His son, Akshaye Khanna is a Bollywood actor and so is his younger son, Rahul Khanna. His two children from his second marriage are Sakshi and Shraddha.
He debuted in Sunil Dutt's 1968 film Man Ka Meet as a villain.
He acted in negative roles until his big break in the film Mere Apne (1971) directed by Gulzar.
In 1997, he introduced his son Akshaye in the film Himalay Putra, which he produced and also starred in. In 1999 he received the Filmfare Lifetime Achievement Award for his contribution to the film industry for over three decades.
In 1997, he joined Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) and was nominated from Gurdaspur, East Punjab in the 1998 Lok Sabha poll.
In 2002, the star-factor helped him oust five time Lok Sabha member Sukhbans Kaur Bhinder. He became Union Minister for Culture and Tourism.
Vinod Khanna was the highest taxpayer in Mumbai in 1990-91. Having peaked in Bollywood, he became a follower of Osho Rajneesh and left the film industry, in the'70s for eight years. At this time, he was the most successful actor in the Bollywood, in competition with Amitabh Bachchan. He then rejoined the industry, in the mid '80s.
