'Lofing' with Lola
Coming to the most popular Indian today, Indians are certainly rockin! The most popular singer (certainly not for his singing) on American Idol (Star World) today seems to be Sanjaya Malakar. Every American on the road seems to root for Sanjaya. As they say, anything can happen on a reality show. The show’s counterpart has proved this, time and again in India. It depends on the number of people sending SMSes round the clock for days on end from. One wonders how does the show retain credibility at all?
But coming to Sanjaya Malakar, what makes Sanjaya so hot? Not the fact that he’s 17; nor the fact that his looks are anything but stunning; nor for that matter, the fact that his singing is nothing to write home about; he’s extremely unpopular with some of the judges. In fact one of the judges makes no bones about expressing his contempt for Sanjaya. And yet, the man sings from his heart and smiles guilelessly and innocently into the camera. Is that what is responsible for the millions of votes he’s able to garner? Or is it a case of audiences not understanding a word of what he sings most times? That certainly was what the most unpopular judge on the show had to say of Sanjaya’s singing last week. That he hadn’t understood a word of what Sanjaya had sung!
The mentor on the show Jennifer Lopez had a lot to say to each contestant. A passionate singer herself, her most important message to the participants of the show was, when you sing, you must make people feel through your singing!
But don’t you wonder why the compere keeps making Sanjaya do the stand up-sit down exercise all the time! All contestants, judges, and the compere are totally perplexed at what it is about Sanjaya that the voters seem to love so much. Mind you, this time, it isn’t the small Indian community that is sending in the votes. Whatever be the reason, Sanjaya seems to be certainly going places. And yes, his father is an Indian but his mother is an Italian. Seems like Indians and Italians seem to be coming up with successful successors not only in India!
And now, here’s Surfing Sara signing off on this patriotic note.
