Are star parents using their kids?

If snazzy posters and king-sized billboards could sell a film, the entire industry would have been churning out hits every Friday. As any kid will tell you, it is not enough to peg a film on its content or star cast. You need, bucks, balls and a personal touch to make things work for you.

Karan Johar earlier used to have his parents present at all important media-related events. Aamir is rarely seen without his spouse-of-the-moment whether it’s Reena (earlier) or Kiran (now). But these days’ it is the kids in the forefront.

There are some stars who religiously keep their children away from the limelight. While Akshay may be spotted with his son at the Marriott poolside every weekend he never parades his son in front of the media. Similarly, few insiders know that Aamir’s son is borderline dyslexic but the actor wisely keeps his personal and professional lives separate.

But kids can be great sympathy gatherers, attention grabbers, talking points and marketing tools, all rolled into one. And they complement the launch of branded film merchandise and whirlwind promotional tours oh-so-well. Not to mention, the n-number of times, they are pulled out of the magician’s hat to gain sympathy when the going gets tough.

Are some star parents using their kids to further their cause? A closer look at some of the incidents in recent times seems to say so.
