Today we know her as Nysa Devgan's grandmother and Kajol's mother. But 30 years ago, Tanuja was better known as Shobhana Samarth's daughter and Nutan's kid sister. Nutan, who was approximately seven years older to Tanuja achieved fame at a fairly young age. She was considered an actress of great repute and was the top heroine for many years.

Tanuja never really climbed the ladder of success and always remained a second-rung heroine. A lot of people believe she lacked her sister's acting talent. But that was not the case. There were many films such as Jewel Thief and Imtihan where Tanuja could prove her acting abilities.

It was her refusal to toe the line that did not go down well with the producers of that era. In an age where women shunned alcohol, Tanuja smoked and drank quite openly. She never bothered to hide her liaisons. Rumourmongers insist quite a few times she has also lost control of the car after having had one too many.

She was briefly married to the producer Shomu Mukherjee but they separated when Tanuja was expecting her second baby. Nobody knows whether they are legally divorced or not, as neither of them has cared to remarry.
