Amidst oodles of glitz and glamour, the 60th Cannes Film Festival got off to a starte on the banks of the French Riviera on Wednesday evening.

The grand dame of international film festivals began with an array of stars walking the red carpet including, filmmaker Wong Kar Wai, actors Norah Jones and Jude Law both stars and director of the opening film My Blueberry Nights.

Also spotted was jury member Toni Collette and upping the glam quotient were former supermodel Liz Hurley and actress Andie McDowell.

The Bollywood presence on the red carpet was spearheaded by now Cannes regulars Aishwarya Rai and Preity Zinta and making his debut on the croisette was the newly-married, Abhishek Bachchan.

The Cannes opening night was also graced by the likes of actress Juliet Binoche and filmmakers Luc Besson and David Lynch.

Once inside the auditorium veteran Portugeuse director, Manoel de Oliveira declared the 60th edition of the Festival open.

German beauty Diane Kruger introduced this year's jury panel consisting of a heady mix of famous filmmakers, actors and intellectuals.

The 11-day long festival closes on May 27 with the screening of American film Expired.
