Thank you Aditya Chopra!
I don't remember the last time I visited a single screen theatre. It was definitely more than five years ago. And then the lack of air-conditioning, the occasional rat that scampered over my toes (Navrang Cinema, Andheri) were sufficient deterrents. But suddenly a week ago with two anxious kids scanning the newspaper on a daily basis, I made my way to a single screen theatre. After all, Tashan was a film that could not be MISSED under all circumstances.
And the long winding queues took me back to my child hood. Today, we have Internet booking, SMS booking, home delivery, but for many years the only option was to suffer patiently in the heat for many hours before I could get a glimpse of Amitabh romancing Rekha. It made the experience a trifle extra special. Today some things have changed, Amitabh no longer romances Rekha, Tabu and Jiah Khan have taken her place and multiplexes have mushroomed all over the country.
But as the ubiquitous HOUSE FULL board was present outside every single screen theatre I returned to the multiplex wondering what they had to offer. And I was in for a pleasant surprise.
The first film I managed to watch was Hope and a Little Sugar. And came away impressed. The film had its flaws but Anupam Kher as the inconsolable father refusing to accept his son’s death is indeed a memorable performance.
