Music Review: Gaurav, College Days

True to its title, the album is for teenyboppers

Gaurav is an IIM-Ahmedabad student who has come up with his debut Indi-pop album. It is always refreshing to come across anything that is non-Bollywood and yet does not cut corners when it comes to production values.

Back to Gaurav. Honestly speaking, the lad is a very average singer. He seems heavily influenced by the genre of jingle music and Hindi rock which again has been dominated by the likes of Strings, Junoon, Euphoria...get the drift?

So there is some aggression in tracks such as Manzil, and a soft balad-esque feel in tracks such as Aaj Tu Yaad Aayi while College Days, the title tracks seem fit for an ad for a coffee shop.

That is not to take away from the two commendable features of the album: the arrangement and overall production quality. Gaurav has the might of Ranjit Barot to help him with this. Barot, a veteran and a mastercraftsman when it comes to infusing life into the most banal lyrics and melodies, has obviously raised this album from average to worth a listening.

Barot has also enlisted the help of master musicians Sanjay Joseph and Amyt Dutta importantly, whose guitars in tracks such as College Days, and Manzil among others, drive the songs.

The lyrics, oh well, there is nothing much to them. They do not stick.

Verdict: May work with teenyboppers.

It is one of the few decently made music albumsreleased in the current times. College days is very well composed and memorable for all those who have/had carer in professional colleges.

best luck and looking for 2nd video.
