MUSIC REVIEW: Goal is such trash

The John Abraham-starrer, which is being promoted as a sports film can do without playback numbers

Dhols, whistles and bhangra, pulsating music and a chorus that can put any sports stadium cheers to shame… welcome to the hitherto unexplored genre of Indian sports cinema. Pioneered, so to say, by Chak De! India, this one is seemingly a promising genre, what with Indian sportspersons doing well on the field. Vivek Agnihotri's Dhan Dhana Dhan Goal starring John Abraham and Bipasha Basu explores the journey of a local underdog soccer team (Southall United) comprising NRIs, who take on the biggies in English football. Sounds familiar? Well, all sports films invariably do. It's often the treatment that makes one film stand out from among the rest. Bollywood, with its rich song-and-dance tradition, however offers the filmmaker one more way of making his/her film look and sound different from the rest. The music of a film such as this, therefore gains importance.

Dhan Dhana Dhan Goal (let's just call it D3Goal from here on) may just manage to score on the box office, but its music could have definitely been far, far better. While most of the songs aren't exactly the ones, which will keep you going back to them, the album in itself fails on one basic account – the songs could well have been arranged more intelligently.

While on the face of it, the song arrangement may not exactly be high on the agenda of Pritam and T-Series. But having to go through three rather unexciting numbers before reaching the only good song (Halla bol) isn't exactly one's idea of a good music album.

A prominent figure from the music industry once revealed the secret behind making a good compilation. "The idea is to pick the best numbers and then keep juggling their order. Invariably you will find that some of the songs don't deserve to be there at all. Knock them off and get newer ones," he had said.

Of course getting in new numbers is not always possible in an OST. However, the music album of D3Goal seems to have been put together in some sort of a hurry. Of the five original numbers (and one remix) the best is at number four.

Don't be rude or interrupt others who are having a conversation. Ethnic slurs, personal insults and abuses are rather uncool. Criticise, but know where to draw the line. No point putting in personal details or links, we won't publish them. Try and write in English and please, stick to the point!
