Chak De... This reality show is unreal!

Small town Vs Big City? Hindi Vs English? Just what are they thinking?!

Aditya Chopra has achieved a minor miracle of sorts. The very mention of the word Chak De brings a smile to peoples’ faces. It’s a phrase associated with guts, courage and unending tenacity in the face of all obstacles. This film may not be original but where the Indian audience is concerned, Chak De has achieved cult status.

So it was only a matter of time before some one tried to cash in on the Chak De phenomenon. Sure as much 9x has jumped into the fray and Chak De Bachche will air from March 28, 2008. And like a large part of the audience, you might be fooled into believing this is a sports-based programme.

Chak De Bachche is simply another dance-based reality show (How original is that)! The organisers of course beg to differ. They believe the USP of their show lies in the fact that children will sing and dance at the same time. So a child has to be a complete entertainer to even participate on the show.

But let’s not digress. 9x claims to have come up with a concept, which is unique. Here the participants have been segregated on the basis of the city they hail from. There are a total of 24 participants on this show. Twelve of them come from urban areas such as Mumbai, Delhi, Jaipur and other big cities or metros. This team has been christened ‘Metro Rockers’.

And there are these other 12 kids who 9x claims come from ‘rural backgrounds’. This team has been named 'Desi Dhurandars'. And if this concept in itself wasn’t regressive enough, they seem to have got their demographics wrong. The kids are actually from smaller towns like Azamgarh, Bikaner, Saharanpur. In fact one participant is from Khandwa… And India’s musical genius Kishore Kumar was originally from Khandwa. So the competition is not between the ‘rural’ and ‘urban’ kids as they claim, but basically between city kids: Those from smaller towns and those from the state capitals.
