Chak De... This reality show is unreal!

Small town Vs Big City? Hindi Vs English? Just what are they thinking?!

And by the way, who in their right minds would call Udaipur a ‘rural’ city, when one of the most expensive hotels in the world is situated there? And heavens, one of their publicity stills show a contestant from Kolkata in the 'Chhota Shahar'category. What’s more, Amitabh is showed as a ‘Desi- Dhurandhar’ success story while SRK’ is a ‘Metro Rockers’ icon!

But let’s move on. There are two hosts, one for each team. Roshni Chopra is rooting for the Metro Rockers and Manoj Tiwari is cheering for the Desi Dhurandars. So while Roshni speaks in strangely accented English, Manoj Tiwari lets loose in Hindi. But Manoj is probably the only saving grace of this show. Thankfully, he also speaks the language well.

Roshni Chopra presumably will be dressed in Western attire throughout the show. And if the glittering red and gold ensemble she sported for the launch is a trailer, god help the audience. Thankfully Manoj Tiwari was dressed sensibly. One almost expected to see him with a turban around his head. So what are they trying to say here? Small town kids cannot speak in English? Western clothes are a prerogative of the Mumbaikars and Dilliwallahs? Or are they simply falling back on the daily soap stereotypes so perpetuated by the general entertainment channels?

The concept of the show seems regressive enough in itself but the show’s organisers are convinced they have come up with a winner. Indrani Mukerjea, the CEO and founder of INX Media said “I do not find the concept of this show regressive. You will be surprised at the kind of talent we have discovered especially with the Desi Dhurandars.” If that is true then why are the participants being trained after the selection procedure has been completed?

Great piece, preeti. When i switch on my tv during weekends, a suddend rush of irritation floods my body when i see the numerous song-dance shows, with kids and adults trying to "discover" their talent.

nice reading!!

Don't be rude or interrupt others who are having a conversation. Ethnic slurs, personal insults and abuses are rather uncool. Criticise, but know where to draw the line. No point putting in personal details or links, we won't publish them. Try and write in English and please, stick to the point!
