Is TV making a mockery of singers?
Just as Sony Entertainment Television's reality show K For Kishore reaches its finale, the channel is ready with a replacement. Sony continues to rely on music-based shows to attract eyeballs for its weekend prime time slot. Starting next week, seven of Bollywod's most famous voices will take part in a new show called Yeh Shaam Mastani.
So, what's new? Hasn't the concept of making popular singers compete been done to death? The channel argues that Yeh Shaam Mastani is not a contest. It is a show where singers would relive their musical journey in front of a live audience, by performing their biggest chart busters. Each episode will showcase the story of one singer. And the singers will not only exercise their vocal chords but also give fans a glimpse of their acting and dancing skills.
The line-up includes Shankar Mahadevan, Kailash Kher, Rahat Fateh Ali Khan, Kunal Ganjawala, Sukhwinder Singh, Shaan, and the lone girl among these men – Sunidhi Chauhan.
Sunidhi said she accepted the offer as the show did not involve any judging or SMS voting. The singer added she was not comfortable with the format of most reality shows on TV. But she saw the new show as an opportunity to come closer to her fans. The channel said Sunidhi was the only female voice on the show, as she had no parallel.
Kailash Kher said he was happy to be a part of such shows both as a judge and as a participant. "Reality TV has given playback singers an opportunity to be all round performers. Today, thanks to this exposure people recognise the voice behind a chartbuster. For example, my friend Sukhwinder must get as much fame for the Chak De! India number as Shah Rukh Khan." Kher said, "Even if you don't win but manage to get the people's sympathies, you won't be without work".
