REVIEW: SRK's Paanchvi Pass

Cut out the extra silliness, and it could be a winner!

Press conferences, media screenings, a lot of hype and a lot of expectations surrounded Siddharth Basu's latest quiz show Kya Aap Paanchvi Pass Se Tez Hai? So did the show finally live up to all our expectations? Did Shah Rukh finally manage to establish himself as a quizmaster on TV? And did Paanchvi... finally manage to break the mundane 'lock kiya jaye' patterned game shows that flock the small screen?

The format: Does it work?

Borrowing from the international show Are You Smarter Than a Fifth Grader?, this show presented a very fresh concept of quizzing on Indian screens. The show consists of 10 questions on various subjects ranging from Maths to Geography from Std I to Std V course books. The participants are allowed to choose questions from their preferred category on every question. And there are no choices for a question. They can also choose from the three lifelines – Cheat, Copy and Bachao on every level.

Before they start answering questions, a participant is allowed to choose a friend from a bunch of five fifth graders on the show and the lifelines depend on the intelligence of the little one.

If a participant answers all ten questions correctly, he/she wins one crore. And then comes the eleventh question for 5 crore rupees. Here they have no choice of subject and also no friend to cheat from.

But what's embarrassing is that every participant who can't make it to the top, while retiring from the game has to proclaim that he/she is NOT smarter than a fifth grader.

The King of Tellywood?

Every show has a host. And this show too has one. And it's none other than - Shah Rukh Khan! He was written off by critics after his stint with Siddharth Basu's KBC, but that was probably because he was evaluated against Amitabh Bachchan.

This is a new show and Shah Rukh fits the bill perfectly. He is smart. He is good with the five kids on the show. And he behaves like a teacher to the participants.

But what is most heart warming is his ability to involve himself in the show and be like a child himself at times while talking to the one playing the game.
