Review: Iron Man is 4/5
Making a comic book superhero seem believable and larger than life at the same time, is something not many movies can boast of. Iron Man accomplishes this with ease, courtesy some great direction by Jon Favreau and the depth lent to the lead character by Robert Downey Jr.
Based on the popular Marvel Comics created by Stan Lee and Larry Lieber in the '60s, the movie manages to capture the grandeur of the series, as well as add a flavour of its own. Downey plays the role of Tony Stark, a cocky billionaire weapon designer who owns the biggest arms company in the world.
While displaying the destructive power of his latest weapon – a missile called' the Jericho' –to the United States Air Force in Afghanistan, Stark's convoy is attacked by a terrorist group called the Ten Rings. Stark's captors demand that he create the same missiles for them. Instead, he uses the tools provided to create a deadly exoskeleton suit that allows him to escape captivity and kick a ton of ass on the way. The Iron Man is born.
What follows is an awesome display of fireworks, thanks to the improved suit Stark created, and some awe-striking special effects that makes the movie a visual marvel.
The action sequences that follow are choreographed extremely well, making Iron Man a complete treat to any action movie junkie. Unfortunately – as good as it is – the action seems too sporadic and intermittent at times, breaking the flow of the movie every now and then.
If it's any consolation, the movie doesn't feel disjointed, and there aren't too many pace breaking emotional moments like those in Spider-Man 3.
