REVIEW: Pranali is a waste

The film's about abused women. And makes you feel abused as well.

Movies have been made on revolutionary thoughts for as long as we can remember. Pranali also has a revolutionary thought. But it gets utterly wasted with dismal performances, horrible screenplay and very confused film-making.

The thought

Pranali – a never ending journey of a devdasi is hardly about a devdasi. It's about legalising sex workers in India. With India fast overtaking Africa in the number of HIV affected individuals and the population progressing geometrically, legalising one of the oldest professions in the country surely is an issue that deserves attention. And making a film out of it makes perfect sense. What does NOT make sense is the film itself.

The plot

There are no sub plots in the movie. There are only a zillion main plots that keep popping up every now and then. There's one about the devdasi practice (of course), and another one about women trafficking and the one about the screwed up education system and many more. The main plot however deals with revolutionising the sex business. [SEE: Pranali movie pics ]

The movie

If you do not fall asleep or walk out after the initial five minutes, this is what you'll see in the film…

A foreigner Judy (Suzanne Bernert) who talks in grotesque hindi, enters the red light area - Laxmi Nagar in Mumbai looking for Pranali. She wants to know the story of Pranali. Though her husband is writing a book on the same, she still comes to hear it out for herself. And the story begins in flashback.

In a small famine stricken village somewhere on the border of Maharashtra and Karnataka, where people are eating rats in the lack of anything else to eat, lives Pranali (young Pranali played by Vaishnavi Rao). The non-actors who play her parents are shown having this extremely non convincing dialogue on their poor state when Mahant (Abbhay Bhaargava) sees the young girl lecherously and forms a plan. He expresses his wish to make Pranali a devdasi and harps about religion and 'god's wish'.

Lousy direction!!..Ridiculous film. Not one single point in favour of it. A c grade move from first frame to last. Worse than a doordarshan serial.

Don't be rude or interrupt others who are having a conversation. Ethnic slurs, personal insults and abuses are rather uncool. Criticise, but know where to draw the line. No point putting in personal details or links, we won't publish them. Try and write in English and please, stick to the point!
