REVIEW: Pranali is a waste

The film's about abused women. And makes you feel abused as well.

Thus Pranali becomes a devdasi. She slowly grows up to a beautiful young woman (Nargis of Garam Masala fame) living in the temple and fulfilling the old Mahant's sexual needs. Mahant trades her for some political favours from a minister who tries to rape her. She runs away to the police and is sent to a welfare centre who in turn pack her off to the red light area in Mumbai.

The story now takes various turns as we learn about the many unnecessary characters in the movie. The various facets of the sex industry get revealed. We meet Akka (Sudha Chandran) an ex-sex worker who now controls a business of her own. There's Sultan (Upendra Limaye) the taxi driver who works for Akka.

We come across the corrupt minister (Vinay Apte) who tries to talk uncannily like Sanjeev Kumar and his PA (Hemant Pandey) who tries too hard to provide the dismal movie with some comic relief and fails. There's basti ka dada (Vinod Khemani), the minister's goon who has nothing but a good body and trying-to-be-tough looks.

We get introduced to the lives of three sex workers Chanda (Dipsshikha), Kanchi (Rohini Kapoor) and Salma (Vaidehi Singh) without any rhyme or reason. There's also this mad woman Pagli (Sujata Segal) who behaves anything but mad.

Whew! And there's more...Pranali conceives a child and another chapter unfolds. Firstly the birth of an illegitimate child and secondly the problem of getting her admitted to a school become huge plots by themselves. And chances are by that time you are already out of the theatre. [READ: Pranali to have a multilingual release]

Enter Mr Vijay NRI, and the story picks up the revolution aspect that forms the main plot in the movie. Vijay, a writer comes to Pranali and tells all the sex workers how they can change the system and legalise it like in other countries. And the movie continues.

Lousy direction!!..Ridiculous film. Not one single point in favour of it. A c grade move from first frame to last. Worse than a doordarshan serial.

Don't be rude or interrupt others who are having a conversation. Ethnic slurs, personal insults and abuses are rather uncool. Criticise, but know where to draw the line. No point putting in personal details or links, we won't publish them. Try and write in English and please, stick to the point!
