REVIEW: Will Smith's I Am Legend
What the film is about
Usually noted for playing 'Bad Boy' heroes, I Am Legend finds Will Smith as the apparent last human alive on the planet, in one of the greatest cities in the world – New York. Set in a post-Apocalyptic scenario (once again, a killer virus has ravaged the world) his character Robert Neville is a (ho-hum) brilliant scientist who is still out to find a cure for the strain of virus that was initially created to cure cancer. As usual, the road to great deeds is paved with good intentions, which so very often blows up in humanities face.
All alone with his German Shepherd Sam (short for Samantha) he is fighting for his survival against the virus ridden, zombie like, flesh eating, vampire-ish, humans left. Toss in a few sequences from Resident Evil, virus-infected dogs and you have another world-with-zombies style movie. The protagonist, being a brilliant scientist and all, is also desperately trying to find a cure for this disease and reach out to anyone else who may be alive.
What we liked about the film
Even though he may not have directed too many movies, Director Francis Lawrence has done a superb job of capturing the intensity of the characters' struggle for survival while trying to retain every last ounce of his humanity. The phrase 'man's best friend' is also very evident in the relationship between the main character and his only companion, his dog. The visuals depicting what seems to be a forgotten city that was simply just left behind, is excellent. There are plenty of scenes that one would truly appreciate due to the fine camera work. Another great part about this movie is the subtle humour thrown in that gives it a bit of an optimistic view that would make you think, 'Yup! people can still be funny no matter how dire the situation is'. As usual, being the funny man he is, Will Smith pulls that off…without a 'Hitch'.
What we didn't like about the film
Do not go expecting another Will Smith action flick with spectacular stunts, guns blazing and a whole lot of violence in general coupled with obscenities. I am Legend lacks most of those aspects. There are a few action-packed scenes. But they don't last too long.
