MUSIC REVIEW: Dus Kahaniyaan
Lounge music has always fascinated director Sanjay Gupta. And with Dus Kahaniyaan he follows his trend of releasing a separate lounge version of all his songs. But with this album, he has gone a step ahead and released an album of Gulzar's poems read out by the actors in the film.
The cover of the album proudly boasts of being the 'world's first three CD soundtrack'. It probably is, but it's a bit of mishmash. After all, if you want to listen to Gulzar's poems, chances are that you wouldn't be someone grooving to the club beats or unwind to its lounge version.
Having said that however, we were quite satisfied listening to both the club and lounge versions. The tracks may not come across as striking. However to say that they are bad would be rather naïve.
Though not exceptionally impressive but most definitely worth a mention is the title song, Dus. But it tends to lose its initial grip when it begins wandering into the banal techno mode. Ditto for Jaaniye, which though worth mentioning is just about passable. Then again you have songs like Nach le soniye and O mahiya, which are essentially dance numbers but have somehow managed to find themselves in the lounge CD. However the song that totally fits into the 'lounge mood' is Aaja Soniye, sung by Sudhanshu Pandey and Shweta Vijay.
The last few tracks of the album tend to drag and that pretty much applies to the 'club' CD as well. Gulzar's poems are interesting however the whole idea of having instruments playing in the backdrop makes the idea of 'poetry reading' seem redundant.
Finally, would we recommend you buy this album? Sure go ahead but only if you are a hard core Sanjay Gupta fan. But it's not really a 'collector's edition' as the cover makes it out to be.
