MUSIC REVIEW: Sonu's Classically Mild

The singer should stick to singing in films

Sonu Nigam's mew music album Classically Mild has nothing special in it to talk about. Except perhaps a semi-naked Sonu on its cover. Reportedly, he has really worked hard on his body to go bare chested in one of the music videos. We wonder why he did not concentrate on the songs or his singing capabilities instead.

This eight-track album marks Sonu's comeback to non-film music. And considering that Sonu does not have much to sing in films these days, much was expected by his fans from this one album which turns out to be a disappointment to the core.

Classically Mild weaves its way through some songs trying desperately to be classical but end up as run-off-the-mill stuff. It will be wrong to call the music outright bad though. The songs are nice, melodious and Sonu with his voice does justice to each and every number. The album is extremely heavy on beats which makes most of the numbers sound like lounge or club mix.

Every song would invariably remind the listener of some film song they have heard in the past and keep him/her busy trying to remember that exact number. The tune of each and every track in the album is filmy and the only thing that makes them classical is the 'aalaaps' or scattered 'taals' sung in between. Also Sonu's voice does nothing to make it sound anything but filmy.

Verdict: Nice dinner time music to be played in the background though we would prefer if it was replaced with some nice tune from Mozart. And of course our Sonu should stick to singing for movies. His voice is best suited for that. Buy the CD only if you're desperately in love with Nigam or have run out of music CDs to play in that lounge you own. Really not worth buying otherwise!

Rating: 1.5/5

Very poor review! This is an awesome album. I wish the reviewer thinks before writing such stupid reviews.

"we wonder why he did not concentrate on the songs or his singing capabilities instead" and "the songs are nice, melodious and sonu with his voice does justice to each and every number."...When u make contradictory remarks like this, it clearly shows u r off ur mind. And it clearly shows that u dont have the authority to talk about a singer as good as sonu

Looks like ppl have lost their mind. I do not understand y the the critic had 2 make such insinuating remarks about a gem of a singer , i wonder if he is some kinda lunatic idiot. We should rather commend bhai's efforts for doing a classical album instead of doing a regular pop stuff . This is heights of criticisms. Hope ppl indulge in some constructive criticisms which would improve the quality of music in thecountry. I would say it is a fabulous rendition. I ain't givin a damm 4 dis review man, ask da critic 2 take a walk n talk 2 my hand......... Sonu rocks !!! Way to go bhai !!

Divya, i agree with u 100%. The reviewer sounds like that jerk subhash jha. Forget the politics, forget the stupid video and just listen to the music. My favourite tracks are 'suratiya' and 'lamha lamha'. These are vintage sonu nigam. They go down as smooth as wine. Another a+ for the meaningful lyrics. The fusion is tremendous - very subtle and unobtrusive.

The one thing clear about the review above is that it reveals the author's weird bias against sonu nigam. I dont know how such people are allowed to review music. He sounds really sick in mind. He would do better to concentrate more on listening to the music rather than looking at the cover ! People, do not get influenced by the rotten review above. The album is awesome. The music is melifluous, soothing and sonu's rendition is outstanding as usual. Compared to the crap that passes for music these days, its amazing how much sonu has pushed himself to train in such a difficult field. People, buy the album today, i promise , you wont regret it ! Happy listening !

Don't be rude or interrupt others who are having a conversation. Ethnic slurs, personal insults and abuses are rather uncool. Criticise, but know where to draw the line. No point putting in personal details or links, we won't publish them. Try and write in English and please, stick to the point!
