Sami's half-baked score for Dhamaal
The extended Sanjay Dutt courtroom drama has given Indra Kumar's Dhamaal a lot of free publicity. Projected as Dutt's first release after the Mumbai special TADA court gave its verdict, the movie also stars Ritesh Deshmukh, Arshad Warsi, Javed Jaffrey and Ashish Chaudhary.
Now Indra Kumar's earlier films such as Dil, Beta and Raja had chartbusting scores. However in his recent films he has not been able to replicate that success, at least musically. For Dhamaal he has roped in Adnan Sami to compose the soundtrack. Going by Adnan's private albums one expects the album to be of a certain standard.
The album opens with the title track Dekho Dekho Dil Ye Bole. A catchy number sung by Adnan Sami and Shaan, it mainly works because of Sami's singing. Sami successfully adds a mischievous quality (the kind heard in Lift Karade) to his voice. Also, the chorus, Ae Aa Oo Dhamaal, seems to be the kind that will work well through the film as a background theme.
Next up is Miss India Martee Mujhpe. Amit Kumar and Adnan Sami don't add anything to this mediocre track. Another Lift Karadesque song, this one's a bit of a drag. At best it comes across as a poor cousin of the title song.
Asha Bhonsle and Amit Kumar come together for Chandani Raat Hai Saiyan. Perhaps an item song (since the film is supposed to have no female lead), this one comes across as a wannabe Kajara Re. But it ends up sounding like a B-grade dance bar number. Even if it's aiming for the masses, it seems to be completely off the mark. The remix and instrumental version aren't any great shakes either.
The last song is Chal Na Che Shor Machalein. A concert number, going by the cheering and clapping in the background, it's again on the lines of the title track. Though not a great tune, it might just work onscreen, if placed properly.
In the end, Dhamaal has nothing new to offer and its fate on the charts would most probably depend on how the film fares at the box office.
