The Madhuri Magic has just begun!
Oct 30, 2007
I'm mad about Mad. The last time I met Madhuri was the first time I met her in Mumbai. Let me explain. I had met Madhuri earlier when I was in Kolkata. By the time I shifted to Mumbai, she had moved to USA with her family. After five years, she arrived from Denver with her kids and her hubby Ram. Madhuri had signed Yashraj Film's Aaja Nachle. When I was working in Mumbai Mirror, my editor Meenal Baghel wanted me to do a nice mood piece with Madhuri Dixit. That was when I got to know a different aspect of Madhuri. I share some anecdotes, which I couldn't include in my interview then.
When I called her secretary Rikku Rakeshnath, (he is considered a star secretary) he asked me to meet Madhuri at 5 am at Juhu beach. Now that was a weird time for any journalist to meet a star. But I was gung-ho about this assignment. Not every day you get to meet Madhuri Dixit. She had called me on 31st December 2006, and I had partied the previous night till late. I get a wake up call from Rikku, and I rush to Juhu. Madhuri was in her tracksuit, all set for yoga and jogging.
"Hang over, eh?" she smiles. Even before I could reply, she asked me to jog along with her. "It will go, just follow me!" Gosh! That was a bit much for someone who was awake till two in the morning. But I started jogging along with Madhuri, and believe me I was feeling better as the skyline was getting brighter by the second. We spoke about everything, from Bollywood to BMC!
The best thing about Madhuri is that, she doesn't come with extra baggage. You know those starry tantrums. She spontaneously breaks into Marathi with local people when required. When I saw Madhuri in Sanjay Leela Bhansali's Devdas, she looked her age and she had gained a lot of weight. Somehow, I felt that she should retire before she is asked to play Shahid Kapoor's mother. She rightly took a break and concentrated on her family. I must admit that motherhood has made Madhuri more stunning. When I saw her after five years, she looked as charming as ever. "I can't afford to be fat. I mean look at other actors, they are so fit," she would say. Mads was looking ever charming and energetic. "It's all in your mind," she said with an American accent!
Needless to say Madhuri was the last superstar with an amazing success ratio. Even after such credentials she doesn't believe in 'show-shine'. Take an Aishwarya Rai or even a Mallika Sherawat, they move with bodyguards and try to create an aura. "Why would I require a bodyguard?" she laughed, when I asked about the security arrangements. "Being a Mumbaichi mulgi, I don't think the city will harm me. I mean they just love me and my performance. At most they would compliment me, or maybe ask for a photograph. Now, that can't be life threatening, right?" How cool!
Mad stops at nariyal pani (coconut water) stall and the vendor fails to recognise her. She offers me and Rikku coconut water and while sipping she says, "See, people don't even recognise you. What are we talking about?" she says. True! Madhuri comes across as a confident person. I was fortunate enough that I got several occasions to interact with her. And each time she has surprised me with her 'down-to-earth' attitude. "One needs to understand the basic funda, it's a game, and it will get over. Life is beyond pancakes and eyelashes," she says.
Now the promo of her 'comeback' film Aaja Nachle is on air. Monica Bhattacharya, the Public Relation Officer from Yash Raj Films says, "The teaser got a fabulous response. People just can't wait to see Madhuri." She was not kidding, I swear, while we were watching Laaga Chunari Mein Daag at Yashraj Studio, a senior journalist whistled to Madhuri's thumkas when the promo was aired. The madness has just begun… and I'm loving it!
NB: Friends, I am really touched with the kind of response I have received for the Rani Mukerji article. I would not like to defend myself or say anything against those who felt that I am 'attacking' Rani. I would like to mention about a guy called Manideep, a hardcore Rani fan from Kolkata, who has scrapped me 13 times for the blog. Though he is a hardcore Rani fan, he has understood what exactly I wanted to say. I want to clarify one thing that Rani is not a bad hostess. It was a spontaneous reaction, which was absolutely normal. Rani has somehow managed to stop me from writing 'rubbish' about her, but will she succeed in stopping all from doing the same. I wish she could!

Hi dada,

oi madhuri tera kya kehna....
Hey... Mukherji vs mukherji war! I think thats interesting. Accha, where do you live, can we meet for a cup of coffee? I want to meet u personally and share certain secrets about my life, i think that could be interesting for you. I mean you can write a book on my life. Can i ask you a personal question... Are you married?
Oyee rame... U didnt reply to my comment on ur photograph. I think u look dam hot in this pic, i think you can't get this skin tone unless u r using make-up? Did u apply anything? Accha, ur name suggests u r hindu, but what is it that u r wearing in ur neck.. I have seen azzaruddin wearing the same... That's muslim logo ka locket na? Accha lagta hai... Cool dude! Actually, i want to become a model and so wanted to take some tip from you. Plz help na.
As ram has truely put in madhuri appears to be one those superstar divas of indian cinema who does not have any starry airs. She is very much down to earth and knows that as one goes up the best way to stay in people's heart is to remain humble. Although she is making a comeback it remains to be seen how people will react to the film. In our country roles being written for middle aged women are far and few but males continue to remain heros' until eternity. Remember dharamji and sunny deol both romancing dimple at the same time. Rakhee to has played mother to amitji in sakti. Can we imagine srk or akshay kumar playing father to madhuri??
First of all my a heartiest thanks from deep core of my heart to dear ram da for mentioning me in his once more sweet blog.
truly anybody who want to be popular and successful. Surely they should take lessons from the great madhuri dixit, the most powerful lady of bollywood in all times and thats why rated 1st in the most successful actresses of bollywood in all times.
:mr. Ramkamal trades along his path like an elephant who moves graciously ignorig the brickbats. Well, mrram, go on filling us with the sense of immense pleasure which you have been doing all the time.
Oyyee... I have been seeing this photo of ram in times of india also. I wanted to know, have you used bronze make-up like hrithik roshan in dhoom... If so then where do you get that make up? Bada 'sexy' dikhta hai tu! By the way, madhuri ka artcile ekdam jhakkas hai!
Madhuri rocks and so does ram! Hello sir, i have been reading a lot abt u in my hometown. Its great to know that even after joining pritish nandy communicatios as the vice president, you have the guts to write so real abt stars. I mean you might need them in future, but the way u have written abt rani and yellow journalism, they might nt be working with u ever. I have heard that mr nandy is going devdas again.. Why dont u give us some details about the project?
I think every star has a human side and ram as aptly focused on the human side of madhuri. I think she is gorgeous, but now in her second innings she will have tough fight with vidya balan and konkona (she is also in aaja nachley). Todays actors are very smart and they know exactly what to so and how to do. I read in one of ram's article that madhuri felt a bit disturbed when she was shooting in sync sound for the first time. Now thats a limitation which vidya or konkona won't be having. But i wish her all the best.
Wow ram......Yyou make madhuri look so approachable and nice...I admit i have never been a madhuri fan ...But started liking her post 'dil to pagal hai'...She was superb in 'devdas' too...But in' aaja nachle' she looks amazingly beautiful...I think the beauty inside reflects on the outside too...Its so nice to know that she considers it normal to roam around without bodyguards...Are other stars listening??? Great piece...Ram..All the best...Now and always... Rajev paul
