Ganshyam alias Shyam (Suniel Shetty) is from a village. He comes to Mumbai to claim his father’s job in a reputed bank. His father had died on the bank premises in a fire accident, while in service. As per the rules governing the bank, Shyam has to be given the job. He has borrowed a big sum from Kharak Singh (Om Puri) for his father’s funeral and is quite unable to return it. When he comes to the city, he is almost broke and has no place to live in. Over and above this, Anuradha’s (Tabu) father also had died in the same fire. And she has applied for the job as well, while there is only one position vacant.
Baburao Apte (Paresh Rawal) is a crusty old bachelor who owns a huge house. He loves to drink and his bark is usually worse than his bite. When Shyam lands at his doorstep, Baburao takes pity on him and allows him to stay in the house with pittance for rent.

Raju also lives in the same house. He is a graduate without a job but with enormous dreams. He’s been living in Baburao’s house without paying rent for months now. He makes money by doing odd jobs while his mother stays in a home for the aged in another town. Raju has given his mother the impression that he’s doing fantastically well financially.
Raju and Shyam are always at each other’s throats like Tom and Jerry. Baburao has his hands full stopping them from killing each other. Raju’s unhappy about the way his life sucks. While Shyam is hounded by Kharak Singh who needs his loan money back to get his sister married. And no thanks to Raju, Anuradha gets the job at the bank. But by and by, the common ground – the lack of a good life – brings the men together.
Baburao’s phone number has been listed under the name of a fish-canning factory and he keeps getting wrong calls. One of these turns out to be from a kidnapper Kabira (Gulshan Kumar). He’s kidnapped the factory owner’s granddaughter and is demanding a ransom. Only he’s barking up the wrong tree.
On the spur of the moment, Raju plans to turn it to their advantage, save the child and also make some money on the side.
