Heera is a kid when he is left in the care of alcoholic Gangu. Even the name Heera is what he has given himself. He leads a tough life, not knowing who his parents are, while people laugh at him calling him Laawaris – an illegitimate child.

Heera (Amitabh Bachchan) grows up in the poor neighbourhood but finds himself a job and the falls in love with Mohini (Zeenat Aman). But Mohini does not care for him as he does not know anything about his own family. This puts Heera’s back up and he sets about finding who his father and mother are.
