Mangal Pandey: The Rising
The film is set in the 1850s, when India was ruled by the British. This was a time when the British had stopped pretending that they were only trading with India. They had begun plundering the country, treating the locals shabbily and causing quite a bit of resentment among the Indians.
Mangal Pandey (Aamir Khan) is a sepoy in the British army. He saves the life of British commanding officer William Gordon (Toby Stephens) during a battle. The two men become friends for life, despite the difference in their skin colour.
A new rifle is introduced in the army and this comes with a cartridge which is rumoured to be coated with the fat of cows and pigs. The cartridge is usually bitten off before it is loaded and the usage of animal fat brings on a spate of resentment among the Indian sepoys.

In the beginning, Mangal Pandey is quite confident that his friend William would never stoop to anything that would upset the sepoys. But now he is not too sure.
